Marine Cargo Insurance (DMIC)

Overview

Digital Marine Cargo Insurance (DMIC) is the marine cover Kenyan law requires for imported cargo. Without a valid DMIC, KRA will not clear your consignment — so it is not optional paperwork, it is part of getting your goods released.

You start with your Import Declaration Form (IDF) number. We pull your consignment details straight from KRA’s ICMS system, so there is no long form to fill in and no risk of your cargo details disagreeing with what the regulator already holds. You confirm the cargo and invoice details, and the Insurance Regulatory Authority prices the risk at approved rates.

Payment is made on eCitizen by M-Pesa, card or bank. Once the payment is confirmed, your certificate is issued by the Association of Kenya Insurers and transmitted to KRA automatically — and emailed to you for your clearing agent.

Frequently asked questions

The Digital Marine Cargo Insurance certificate is the marine cover required by Kenyan law for imported cargo. KRA will not clear your consignment without a valid one, so any importer needs it.

DMIC is the compulsory, regulator-driven cover for imports: your cargo comes from KRA by IDF number and the premium is set by the Insurance Regulatory Authority. Our standard Marine Cargo product also covers exports and cargo without an IDF, and is priced by AAR.

Just your IDF number. We retrieve the consignment, cargo items and importer details from KRA, and you confirm them before we ask IRA for a premium.

The Insurance Regulatory Authority, at approved rates. The amount you see is the exact amount you are invoiced on eCitizen — AAR does not add anything to it.

Through eCitizen, by M-Pesa, card or bank. eCitizen is the only permitted payment channel for DMIC, and your certificate is only issued once your payment is confirmed there.

As soon as eCitizen confirms your payment. The certificate is issued by AKI, sent to KRA for clearance automatically, and emailed to you as a PDF.

A consignment can only be covered once. If your IDF already carries marine cover, that existing certificate stands and you do not need to buy another.
